The Outside Piano Bar!

Flowerfield Arts Centre 11.00am -12.30pm  Saturday 23rd July FREE ADMISSION

Inside out if the sun shines - Outside in if the rain threatens!

Free music in an elegant style, played by John Scott Trotter in the public park at Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart. Pianist John Trotter, in proper evening attire, will play a selection of popular tunes on the grand piano, including favourites from the Jimmy Kennedy songbook. So if you go down to the woods today, you are in for a NICE surprise (no bears, though).

An informal bar service will be serving a range of soft refreshment. This outside free performance will move inside if the rain comes early.

However trousers must be worn at all times.

   Morelli’s Cento Anni Celebrations

To help celebrate 100 years of business in the area, the following events have been organized and funded by the Morelli families, with support from the Portstewart Community Association and Coleraine Borough Council. The world record attempt will take place in the grounds of the Dominican College, Portstewart, whilst the rest of the entertainment will take place at the crescent. All events to-day will be compared by Brian Moore. For more details, or more up to date information on how to participate or volunteer services for the world record attempt please check the website www.centoanni.co.uk. In addition to the following events there is a photographic display which runs from July 2nd to July 30th   in Flowerfield Arts Centre. Admission is free.
     
3.00PM   WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT

The longest chain of people licking ice cream was achieved by 2,694 participants at an event organised by

Augustana College (USA) in Rock Island, Illinois, USA, on 20 April 2010.  This is the record Morelli’s will be trying to lick on July 23 2011 with the help of 3000 eager and willing ice cream lovers. To participate you will need one of the  registration packs which are available from all the local Morelli outlets.

Hailing from the same region in Italy as the Morelli Family, that of Val Di Comino between Rome and Naples, the Meglio group will add an authentic Italian flavour to the day’s celebrations.  Meglio are renowned for their diversity, from traditional Neapolitan music and songs, to Jazz, to the music of the 60s and to more contemporary offerings.
 Guaranteed to get young and old off their feet and joining in the fun and the dance.

 

THE BANSHEES IRISH DANCERS

A  performance from local adult Irish dancers, who get together every Monday night 7.30pm at the

THE GEORGE JONES BAND

George Jones

Legendary member of Clubsound, natural comic and popular  radio presenter
George Jones  performs with his own band, live at the Crescent Bandstand.

 

INTERACTIVE  LASER  LIGHT  DISPLAY
The impressive Dominican College provides the grand backdrop for the interactive laser light display. Brightly coloured words and messages projected across the building will entertain and encourage interaction and participation from the crowds of onlookers. Organized by Coleraine Borough Council, held in the Portstewart Town daily Mon-Fri from 10am-2pm and lasting to 12th August. For young people aged 7-10 years old. Activities include: Football, sports, disco's, rounders and arts and crafts etc. Enrolement is on the first day of the scheme. For further information contact the Sports Development Office. 7.30PM “BOURBON SWING” JAZZ BAND

Bourbon Swing Jazz Band... One of Northern Ireland's best Dixieland bands, they have played at International Jazz events in Sacramento, France, Scotland, New Zealand and Australia. Playing in the best New Orleans tradition, their influences range from King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton to Louis Armstrong.

4.00PM-5.00PM  THE BLUE MOSQUITOS


Australian based contemporary folk band- The Blue Mosquitoes are embarking on their first European tour that includes 23 gigs over 5 weeks (between 2 Jul & 7 Aug 2011), travelling between England, Ireland and Scotland.

The tour is promoting the band’s new album- Paper boats, The Blue Mosquitoes’ first major release, aiming to take their music to an international audience.

The album has been reviewed and described by FolkOrbit – ‘Brilliant! ... Their self -penned songs flavoured with Irish Folk Music all blend into an amazing listening experience. This young Australian Folk Band from Hobart can’t fail to hide their ancestral love of Celtic Music. Their energy and soulfulness flows seamlessly throughout this well produced album.’

The band's sound is rooted deeply in Celtic music, with an undeniably Australian character. The strong song writing talents and musical collaboration of the band members have taken the band in new and exciting directions. Their new album features 10 tracks ranging from insightful ballads to high energy tunes.
The band consists of:
Hannah Foley (19) vocals and violin
Stuart Foley (her brother - 14) guitar and mandolin
Chris Boon (their cousin - 18) vocals, guitar, whistle and mandolin
Chris Coleman (22) bass and backing vocals
Lindsey Meldrum (20) backing vocals
The UK/Ireland tour has been three years in the making. A highlight of the tour is sure to be their gig at the Troubadour in London, which has hosted the likes of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan. They are also playing at exciting new venues such as Inspiral, Camden Town.
Other highlights will include performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Ireland leg which is the home of the music that has so greatly influenced the band

7.15PM THE BANSHEES IRISH DANCERS
Another chance to catch a performance from our local adult Irish dancers. These local legends deliver a polished performance, obviously as the result of hours of practice, yet also displaying their enjoyment in participating in it.

7.30PM “WHISKEY IN THE JAR”
This three piece traditional act are extremely popular, whenever they play in the local bars.

7.30PM THE WILLIE DRENNAN ULSTER FOLK BAND

Formed out of the Ulster Scots Folk Orchestra.  USFO first played at the festival in 2004 and have performed every year since, always attracting large crowds. As well as some old favourites, expect some great new material, never played at the festival before. 

9.00PM COCKTAIL COMPETITION
Come and watch the best cocktail bar men and bar maids from the triangle battle it out for the crown of Red Sails Cocktail King/ Queen. Held in Shenanigans Portstewart.

12 NOON-4 PM BATTLE OF THE BANDS COMPETITION

A competition where up to 10 young bands from across the province display their talents live in Portstewart town Hall. Admission is free and there is no entry fee for the bands.  It’s winner takes all with prizes including free studio time equivalent to a two-track demo sponsored by The Music Room, a one track video recording sponsored by Eccentric Light and the opportunity to get their guitars customized, sponsored by Vinyl Touch.
This is an all ages event and no alcohol is permitted in the venue. At the time of going to press the following bands have entered the competition: Clouds Stop Voices, Silver Theory, Dying Breed, Sikottic, So Long Lisa, The Undecided,  Stress On The Ruin, My Pet Parasites, Jamie Sloan, and Havana House Party.

7.00PM-9.00PM JUNIOR FISHING COMPETITION

4.30PM-5.30PM BETTYLEE AND THE BLONDE
Live music from a four piece indie/ folk/ acoustic pop band from Limavady.
Leanne and Ashleen have been playing together for years. In Jan 2009 they formed Bettylee and the Blonde with Don Reilly on bass and more recently Jonathan Lynn joining on Drums. After 4 weeks and 2 gigs booked two days at the blast furnace to record a demo EP. Both 'Victory' and 'Not lookin for love' reached no2 on NiChart.com. The Bettylee and the Blonde sound is pretty unusal and familar and is influenced by far too many to mention. Bettylee and the Blonde made the final 4 bands of a competion trying to win a record contract and publishing deal with Belfast Label Audio Ill and made the live finals of the BT Sounds like Summer Heats In 2009 and 2010. We also Won the outlet final of the Guinness 'Our Thursdays' Competion.

7.30PM BLACK ROSE-THIN LIZZY TRIBUTE BAND
One of the best Thin lizzy tribute bands on the circuit, coming all the way from the North East of England. The classic rock tracks like Whiskey in the Jar, Jailbreak and The Boys Are Back In Town are as popular now, as when they were first released. www.blackroseband.co.uk

FUN DAY, ALL DAY AT THE CRESCENT
Fun and games, gift stalls and lots of free entertainment. Craft and Collectables fair in Portstewart Town Hall from 1pm-8pm.

12NOON DRUM WORKSHOP

 Wassa Wassa Workshops (established by experienced percussionist Niall Delahan) will be providing African drum workshop at the crescent. We are looking for up to 16 teenagers and four adults to take part. Those taking part will then provide the music in the fancy dress parade. Drums and costumes will be provided. Anyone interested in taking part should email redsailsfestival@yahoo.co.uk or ask any of the organizers during the week of the festival, if there are any spaces left. The workshop is sponsored by the Cromie Institute in conjunction with the P.C.A.

1.15PM CHILDREN’S  FANCY DRESS PARADE
ASSEMBLES AT ATLANTIC CIRCLE
Entry is free to children of all ages and there are great prizes to be won. The three fancy dress categories are, Most Topical, Most Comical, and Prettiest. Judging will take place at Atlantic Circle between 1.15pm and 2.00pm.

2.00PM SHARP PARADE LEAVES ATLANTIC CIRCLE

The Parade this year will include a band of percussionists from our workshop earlier, Street Artists, as well as our Festival King and Queen, vintage cars, and our local Fire Engine. The parade will make its way from Atlantic circle, along the promenade and finish at the bandstand at the Crescent.

 

2.45PM CHILDRENS PUPPET SHOW

Scallywags Puppets present the X Factor. A show that will be enjoyed by young and old. Features characters like Irish Lou and Simple Simon.

3.30PM-4.45PM LIVE MUSIC FEATURING THE GROOVE ROBBERS

8.30PM RED SAILS RAFFLE DRAW
As the Red Sails Festival is non-profit making, donations, sponsorship of events and raffle ticket sales play a major part in helping to contribute to the cost of the festival. The Portstewart Community Association would like to thank The Bayview Hotel , The Anchor, Connie’s Hairdressing, Garvagh Museum and Heritage Centre, The Ulster Military Vehicle Club and Bann Cruises for donating prizes. Tickets available from Maud’s Ice Cream shop, Montgomery’s Sweet shop and P.C.A. members.

8.450PM COMHCHEOL
Irish Traditional music and popular songs, featuring a group of talented young local musicians, whose group name means “Harmony”. Performed at the Tenth Anniversary festival last year and were so popular we have invited them to play again this year.

 

9.15 PM LIVE MUSIC FEATURING NEW MOON
One of the North West finest bands is back, after a three year absence, to once again provide the musical finale for the festival. New Moon’s crowd pleasing performances include many favourites from the sixties and seventies. Sponsored by C.B.C.


Fireworks10.30pm: Spectacular Fireworks Display

The grand finale to the festival. A spectacular fireworks display that will send everyone home with a smile.
