The Portstewart Community Association 10th Anniversary Redsails Festival 2010

 

Sunday 25th July

3.00pm: Red Sails Songs of Praise

Interdenominational Service at the Crescent. To be held in Town Hall in event of bad weather. Includes a performance by The Portrush Musical Society Choral Group.

Portrush music society choral group is a cross community choir that gives everyone of all ages and standards the opportunity to sing, and most importantly, have fun whilst doing it. The main aim of the group is to teach singing from the basics to the more advanced stuff.

And the best thing is that it just costs £1 per week!!!

The choral group have tackled some of the hardest pieces in recent times, such as works by Eric Whitacre. And of course the occasional "Glee" number!

Organised by Coleraine Borough Council

Held in the Portstewart Town daily Mon-Fri from 10am-2pm and lasting to 13th August. Activities include football, sports, discos, rounders and arts & crafts etc. Enrolment is on the first day of the scheme, is for children aged between 7-10 years and the cost is £2 per person.

Modern pop from local duo, which includes ex member of boy band "Upfront"

Staff and customers of our local Bars and Clubs compete in fun events to claim the highly coveted "Red Sails Bar Wars Trophy" for their establishment.

Games include Rodeo Bull and an Ice Cream Eating competition sponsored by Morelli’s To Go!

Plus a couple of other events we like to keep as a surprise.



6.45pm: Live Music - Featuring "Comhcheol"

Irish Traditional music featuring a group of talented young local musicians, whose group name means “Harmony”.

7.15pm: The Banshees (Irish Dancers)

7.30pm: Traditional Afro-Caribbean Music From "Magwere”

This multicultural band includes musicians whose roots originate from Ireland, Poland and Africa and are associated with The Beyond Skin Project, set up in 2004 to address the racism, sectarianism and prejudice in Northern Ireland through the universal language of music and art www.beyondskin.net and www.worldmusicni.com

Free Entertainment At The Crescent:

12.00noon-4.00pm: Music And First Heat Of Red Sails Children’s Karaoke Competition.

Entries will be taken from 1.00pm-1.45pm for the first heat of the Red Sails Karaoke Competition, which starts at 2.00pm. The competition is free to enter. The top five from each of two age categories 5-10 years and 11-16 years will go through to Saturday’s final. Those entrants who do not qualify may try again at the second heat on Friday.

4pm-9pm: Psychic Fair

In Portstewart Minor Town Hall.

4.30pm: Live Music - Featuring “Midnight Voyage”

This young local band plays a mixture of classic rock songs and their own original material.

7.15pm: Rio Salsa Dancers

A performance of Latin American dance from local dancers. www.riosalsa.com

Bourbon Swing7.30pm: “Bourbon Swing” Jazz Band

Bourbon Swing Jazz Band... One of Northern Ireland's best Dixieland bands, they have played at International Jazz events in Sacramento, France, Scotland, New Zealand and Australia.

Playing in the best New Orleans tradition, their influences range from King Oliver and Jelly Roll Morton to Louis Armstrong.

This event is organized by Coleraine Borough Council and is one of several heats during the summer. There are two age groups 4-9 years and 10-15 years. Entry details are available by calling the Council’s Leisure Services Department.

5.00pm: Live Music - Featuring Local Band “Bone Idol

Bone Idol is a 5-piece Covers Band playing some of the best music from the 50’s right up to the present day. Bone Idol play a high-energy, feel-good set, mixing classic tracks by bands such as Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Rolling Stones, Free, ZZ Top, Credence Clearwater Revival and even Elvis Presley, with more contemporary material from Stereophonics, Snow Patrol, The Zutons, The Script and Kings of Leon, to name but a few.

They also funk it up a bit, (that’s funk with an ‘n’), with some classic soul from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Wilson Pickett, James Brown and The Temptations. Here they mix more pared-down funky guitar grooves with Thin Lizzy-style harmonised guitar arrangements of the soul brass section.

7.00pm: Willie Drennan And Nae Goats’ Toe

Nae Goat's Toe was formed out of the Ulster Scots Folk Orchestra. USFO first played at the festival in 2004 and have performed every year since, always attracting large crowds. According to their new CD, they are now "Wired Up and Plugged In".

7.30pm Bridge Evening

Held in St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Parish centre. Entry £2 per person. Everyone welcome.

8.30pm: International Comedy Hypnotist Gareth Fulton

In Portstewart Town Hall. Doors open at.7.30. Show commences 8.00pm. Entry fee at the door.

12 noon - 4:00m: Battle Of The Bands Competition

A competition where up to 10 young bands from across the province display their talents live in Portstewart town Hall. Admission is free and there is no entry fee for the bands.

Subject to change, the bands who have entered this year are:

  • A Divine Sentence
  • Headshot City
  • Become A Hero
  • They Fight Paris Falls
  • Peter Cheuk and Friends
  • Revallagh
  • Caspar’s Friend
  • Relinquish
  • Exit Wound.

The winners will receive free studio time equivalent to a two-track demo sponsored by Shipwreck Studios, a one track video recording sponsored by Eccentric Light, plus airtime on the Basementsound internet radio station. (www.basementsound.co.uk).

8.30pm Performance By The Hampsey Harp School

A harp recital that includes 4-5 performers from the Hampsey School of Music Garvagh.

Portstewart Town Hall. Admission Free.

Hampsey School of Music was formed in 1995 and named after Denis Hampsey who was born in 1695. Denis was blind and lived until he was 112 years old. In September 1995 music lovers in Garvagh asked Janet Harbison a renowned harp teacher to take classes in Garvagh. As a result teaching started in three local schools and then moved to be taught from the Community Building. Funding was received and 20 harps were purchased for loan to the children from 7yrs and up.

Members of the Hampsey Harp School perform at local events such as weddings and concerts. They have appeared on the BBC and UTV and have participated in European Tours organised by Janet Harbison (Irish Harp Orchestra). Lucy Kerr won the All Ireland Final a number of years ago and others have participated at local fleadhs and festivals gaining a number of prizes.

Three former pupils now teach the harp to a total of 20+ pupils.

Friday 30th July

11.00am-100pm Beach Hurling Demonstration At The Strand

Centuries ago a version of the game of hurling was played on the beaches of the North Coast, including Portstewart. It was similar to the Scots game of Shinty. The youth members of the local Eoghan Rua club will provide a demonstration of the skills of hurling on Portstewart beach.

A show that unites fans of different music genres and different generations.

Fun Day, All Day At The Crescent

Fun and games, gift stalls and lots of free entertainment. Craft and Collectables fair in Portstewart Town Hall from 1pm-8pm.

11.15am: Fancy Dress Parade Assemble Atlantic Circle

Entry is free to children of all ages and there are great prizes to be won.

The three fancy dress categories are, Most Topical, Most Comical, and Prettiest. Judging will take place at Atlantic Circle between 11.15am and 12noon.


12 noon (sharp): Parade Leaves Atlantic Circle

The Parade this year will include a Samba Band, Street Artists, as well as our Festival King and Queen, vintage cars, and our local Fire Engine. The parade will make its way from Atlantic circle, along the promenade and finish at the bandstand at the Crescent.

1.00pm Children’s Entertainment Benny And Jenny

A performance of song and dance for the younger members of the audience.




1.30pm-3.00pm Red Sails Children’s Karaoke Final

2.30-4.00pm At Flowerfield Arts Centre-Piano Bar In The Park

Free music in an elegant style, played by John Scott Trotter in the public park at Flowerfield Arts Centre, Portstewart. Pianist John Trotter, in proper evening attire, will play a selection of popular tunes on the grand piano, including favourites from the Jimmy Kennedy songbook. So if you go down to the woods today, you are in for a NICE surprise (no bears, though).

An informal bar service will be serving a range of soft refreshment. This outside free performance will move inside if the rain comes early.

The Wig Wam Glam Band3.00pm: Glam Rock Tribute Featuring The Wig Wam Glam Band

This popular local band with a growing international reputation will be playing many favourites from the glam rock era.

9pm: Live Music - Featuring The Jungle Vips

One of the North West’s best acts featuring some of the areas finest musicians. The band has nine musicians including three saxophone players, trumpet, guitars, piano and drums. Their set includes the hits of the Rat Pack, Robbie Williams, Elvis, Queen, Steve Wonder, the Commitments and much more.


Fireworks10.30pm: Spectacular Fireworks Display

The grand finale to the festival. A spectacular fireworks display that will send everyone home with a smile.
